How to make and storage homemade nut butter

Making home made nut butters is easy, delicious and a lot healthier in comparison to the majority of store bought brands. The best part is you can cater to your dietary needs using whatever seeds or nuts you desire. You can check out some of our Vitamix nut butter recipes on our website.

Storing Commercial Nut Butters

Store bought commercial nut butter usually includes a use by date, best before date and storage suggestions, so it makes it nice and easy to know how long you can store it. To ensure longevity keep your nut butter in the fridge, especially if you live in a hot and humid climate. A store bought commercial unopened can of nut butter may last up to 2 years or more.

Some commercialised brands that make a more “natural” version of their original nut butter often include added nasties so be sure to check the label to avoid unwanted additives. These unwanted additives though are what extend store bought nut butters shelf lives and keep what’s inside the jar spreadable.

A more natural, store bought jar of nut butter that has little additives will go rancid more quickly, so the safest option is to refrigerate it after opening. It’ll keep for between three and six months in the fridge, plus you won’t get the oil separation inside the jar that can happen when you store it at room temperature.

Storing Homemade Nut Butter

Homemade nut butters will last about a month in the fridge and up to 3 months in the freezer.

Since homemade nut butter doesn’t have added preservatives like most store-bought nut butters it can go rancid more quickly. The key is to limit your home made nut butter to light, heat and air, preferably keeping it refrigerated or even frozen. If the room temperature is above 21 degrees Celsius I would suggest keeping it in the fridge. Be sure to close the jar as soon as you’ve used it, avoid leaving it open on the bench for when you make that inevitable second nut butter sandwich.

Home made nut butter is a fantastic a healthier option to have in the home and to use for a myriad of recipes! You can get creative with whatever seed or nut you choose and sometimes you can mix them all together like our ABC Butter.
