Hi there! It’s Kelly from Typically Simple and I am back with a recipe for one of my all-time favorite treats – Shamrock Shakes! As many of you know, Shamrock Shakes are only available for a short time each year at McDonald’s however, this recipe is so super easy that you can make them right at home, any time of the year.

St. Patrick’s Day is one of my absolute favorite holidays…in my book, it ranks up there with Christmas. That might be due to the fact that I come from a very Irish family plus Igrew up in the Chicago area – a city that takes St. Patrick’s Day quiteseriously with parades, festivities, and dying theChicago River green each year.

Along with eating my favorite meal, corned beef and potatoes, I also deck myself out in green clothes. I may or may not have a pair of green striped tights that I bought especially for St. Patrick’s Day. The annual wearingof the greenwas also a lot offun when I was teaching because we would hold a contest in my classroom to see who could wear the most green. All of the teachers enjoyed seeing how creative the kids would get with the color green and shamrocks. Then we would take a class vote to see who wore green the best. And the winner would receive a Shamrock Shake at lunch!

Little did I know at the time, just how easy it is to make a Shamrock Shake at home! After trying out a few different recipes, I came up with one that combined the best of the best. This recipe has just the right amount ofmintflavor and milk shake consistency that will make you head back to the blender for seconds!

The full printable recipe is at the end of this post, but here’s what you’ll need:

  • vanilla ice cream
  • milk
  • mint extract
  • green food coloring
  • whipped cream
  • green sprinkles
  • chocolate chips (optional)
  • chocolate syrup (optional)

Put the ice cream, milk, mint extract, and food coloring into a blender and cover with the lid. Blend on high until all of the ingredients are mixed together really well and the consistency looks smooth.

I like to make thicker milk shakes, so I increasedthe ice cream to milk ratio just a tad. However, if you would like a thinner consistency, you can either decrease the amount of ice cream you add to the recipe, or increase the amount of milk.

Pour the blended milk shake into glasses, add some whipped cream and top off with green sprinkles and chocolate chips. Or you could drizzle some chocolate syrup on top to create a delicious mint chocolate shamrock shake!

As with any recipe that I share, there are lots of optional flavors and mix-ins for this shake. Not a fan of mint? You can stillfollow the recipe without adding any mint extract…or you could add some vanilla or chocolate flavoring instead. Love Shamrock Shakes, but would rather not make them green? No need to add the food coloring…it’s just there in there to add some fun St. Patrick’s Day color! But one thing I definitely recommend is keeping that big dollop of whipped cream on top!

Tried this recipe at home. Shamrock shakes are my wife’s favourite, so I surprised her with homemade ones for her birthday. This recipe was a good base to get the right ingredients, and it does look amazing when you’re done. However I had to actually use 3/4 teaspoon mint extract to get the right taste, and I had to use a whole tube of green gel to get the right color. Ended up working out well. It was a hit with my wife.
