Prue Leith shares reason for Great British Bake Off exit (2024)

The Great British Bake Off star Prue Leith has explained her reasoning for stepping back from the celebrity version of the Channel 4 show. Earlier this week it was confirmed that the 84-year-old would be leaving Celebrity Bake Off – but she’ll remain as a judge on the regular edition.

Explaining her decision to Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard on This Morning on Thursday, March 14, Prue said: “I'm still doing The Great American Baking show, I'm still doing the Great British Bake Off – which is the two main shows of Bake Off. What I'm not doing this year is the celebrity one and it's mainly because these things are filmed back to back the whole way through the summer.

“You start in April and you end at the end of August and honestly you get no time off. I'm getting a bit old and there are places I want to go to and other things I want to do.” Get the best user experience with WalesOnline’s Premium app on Apple or Android

Channel 4 confirmed that Prue would be stepping back from Celebrity Bake Off in a statement provided to The Independent which read: “Prue will be joining Paul as usual to judge The Great British Bake Off but will be stepping back from The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer.” Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson is said to be in the running to replace the South African food writer in her absence.

The upcoming series of the celebrity Great British Bake Off is currently airing on Channel 4. The cast features a mix of famous faces including Jodie Whittaker, Danny Dyer, Joe Locke, and Oti Mabuse.

Prue is currently fronting her own cooking TV show with her husband John Playfair, titled Prue Leith’s Cotswolds Kitchen, on ITV1 and ITVX. The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4. You can keep up to date with the latest TV and showbiz news by signing up to the newsletter here.
