Today's Wordle answer (game #1078)

NYT Wordle today — answer and hints for game #1078, Saturday, June 1 (3)

  • NYT average score: 3.8
  • My score: 3
  • WordleBot's score: 4
  • Best start word performance*: SAINT (1 remaining answer)
  • My start word performance: SEPIA (6)

* From WordleBot's Top 20 start words

Today's Wordle answer (game #1078) is… BASIN.

Every now and then I get very lucky with my random start word. Today was one of those days. I began with SEPIA, which gave me one green letter and two yellows and cut my options to a mere six– a great opening that I was able to convert into a 3/6.

If you weren't so fortunate today, you might have had to settle for a four, but I doubt it was much worse than that, because BASIN is really not too bad. WordleBot currently reports an average score of 3.8 for it, but scores generally drop over the course of the day and I wouldn't be surprised if it was down at 3.6 by the time we roll over into Sunday's game.

In terms of its letters, there's nothing particularly notable here. As my analysis of every Wordle answer shows, B is the third most common starting letter in the game, behind only S and C. That sometimes surprises me – because B is not that common overall (it ranks 18th). But then again, B pairs very well with two of the most common letters in the game, R and L, for the likes of BREAD and BLEED. Not that it sat next to either of those today, but it helps explain why it's often found at the beginning of a word.

B aside, what you have here is four very common letters, one of which – S – is in the 'wrong' place; S only occurs 80 times in the middle of an answer, compared to 365 times at the start. That will have led to a lot of yellow Ss today, but words that included it were among the big winners here. SAINT was the biggest winner of all, leaving only one possible solution, but SANER and SNARE (both four) were also great choices, while the more popular STARE (22) and SLATE (19) were not too far behind. I'll also give a shout out to TRAIN – which is one of the more popular starters, and which left only three; that one might well have influenced the average today.

The five words on my shortlist were BASIC, BASIL, BASIN, BASIS and OASIS; the one I missed, according to WordleBot, was ASTIR. Playing BONUS was a slight risk, because it might have left me a 50/50 between BASIC and BASIL. WordleBot instead preferred a bunch of words ending in S: CLUBS, CORNS, CLOTS and a couple of others. These would all have guaranteed me a 3/6, but I didn't think to play one because none contained a B, which I definitely wanted in there.

Not to worry: my lucky day continued, with BONUS giving me the N that meant the answer had to be BASIN. I played that next for my 3/6 – and beat WordleBot again too.

Yesterday's Wordle hints (game #1077)

In a different time zone where it's still Friday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1077, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday's Wordle answer was C.

C is a very common starting letter in Wordle – in fact, it's the second most common of all, behind only S.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday's Wordle was S.

S is really not a common ending letter at all - mainly because Wordle generally doesn't allow plurals. It's the 15th most likely letter to appear at the end of an answer.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1077)

  • NYT average score: 3.9 [revised]
  • My score: 3
  • WordleBot's score: 3
  • Best start word performance*: SLICE, STALE, SLATE, CRANE (14 remaining answers)
  • My start word performance: PARSE (52)

* From WordleBot's Top 20 start words

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1077) was… CHAOS.

CHAOS by name, not really CHAOS by nature though, because this Wordle is probably the easiest we've had since TITAN on Saturday. WordleBot says it currently has an average score of 4.0 [revised to 3.9], which still marks it out as relatively tough – albeit not to the same degree as GUMMY, PAPAL or BEVEL.

Unlike any of those words, there's no repeated letter here, which removes one potential complication immediately. There are no truly uncommon letters either. H is the lowest of these five, but it sits 14th, so in the middle of the range rather than near the bottom. What's more, as my analysis of every Wordle answer shows, it forms the fifth most common starting combination in the game, together with C.

All that said, an average score of 4.0 still places CHAOS above many Wordles. I suspect the S at the end of the answer explains that to an extent, because that's a fairly uncommon occurrence. Of course it also happened with MINUS only a few days ago, and AMASS not long before that, so uncommon or not you should at least have been prepared for the possibility.

Many of the best start words were quite helpful, which will have bought the average down. WordleBot's two favorites, CRANE and SLATE, both left only 14, while the ever-popular STARE was at 16.

My random opener, PARSE, was some way behind that at 52, but considering that on my previous three games I had 204, 663 and 938 options, I'll gladly take that! And it made the difference today. I applied my usual approach of using the most common unplayed letters and came up with STAIN; technically I should have had O and L in there rather than I and N, but I couldn't think of a good word that enabled me to do that. And I'm glad that I didn't try too hard, because STAIN gave me a green A and remarkably cut the options to only a single word, which was CHAOS.

Given that I only had one green letter and one yellow, this might seem unlikely. But S could only now go in two positions, and was very unlikely to be second given that only a vowel could precede it there as in USHER or ASHEN. However, I don't think there are any words that start vowel-SA other than USAGE, and by this stage I knew that there was no E, so it couldn't be that.

Instead, the S had to be at the end: --A-S. I played around with the letters for a while, then established that CHAOS was the only word that fit, and played it next for my 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
