Why You Will Love This Mocha Iced Latte

  • It’s super refreshing and tasty

This iced coffee helps you stay cool in hot weather whilst providing a delicious and indulgent chocolatey flavour.

PS. If you're a chocolate lover, make sure you try this triple chocolate crepe recipe!

  • It’s very simple

This recipe for iced mocha contains only three basic ingredients! Most of them already are in your kitchen cupboard - including instant coffee!

  • No special equipment needed

You can easily make this iced mocha latte in the comfort of your own home. All you need is a glass (300 ml), a spoon, and a straw! Yes, you don’t need to have an espresso machine to make this!

  • It is healthy-ish

Homemade coffee is normally less calorific than the ones that are available in cafes. Reason? Professional baristas usually use full-fat milk (it froths better) and pre-made powders to create iced cold drinks such as iced mocha, iced latte, frappe etc. – this is more efficient for them, however, these powders are full of added sugar.

By making both ice and hot coffees at home, you take back control of the drinks’ contents without any sacrifice on taste! (PS. These findings are from my own experience working as a barista for an independent coffee shop and a worldwide chain.)

  • It is very versatile

There are many variations of this iced coffee drink – from white to orange or peppermint. Be creative and enjoy a new flavour every day of the week! See more details for variations and twists below.

  • It saves you money

Making (iced) coffee at home is way cheaper than buying it from a café (or supermarket) each time. This could save you a lot of money, especially if you’re used to buying it often!

Iced coffee fans will appreciate this pumpkin-spiced iced latte.

Key Ingredients & Substitutes

This iced mocha coffee recipe contains just three basic ingredients, which can be found in most pantries:

  • Cold water from the tap will work here well. For an extra cold coffee drink, you can also fill up a water bottle and keep it in the fridge until serving.
  • Dry instant coffee or cold brew from earlier will be a great coffee base. No espresso needed.
  • Sugar-free chocolate syrup or chocolate sauce will provide maximum flavour to this iced mocha. Use a sauce or syrup as it’s easier to mix and it saves you time melting bar of chocolate.
  • Cold semi-skimmed milk – mocha tastes always better with a little bit of milk in it. Cow's, oat, soya and other plant-based milk will all work in this recipe.
  • Ice to keep the drink chilled for longer. This is completely optional, you can skip adding ice altogether and the recipe will still work.
  • Whipped cream (optional) from a spray can will make a wonderful finish on top of this ice-cold coffee drink.
  • Optional: Sprinkle it with a bit of cocoa or chocolate powder or decorate with shaves of dark chocolate just before you’re ready to serve it.

If you don’t have chocolate sauce (syrup), you can instead use:

  • Hot chocolate powder or cacao (2 teaspoons per glass)
  • Cocoa powder (2 teaspoons) + sweetener (or 1 teaspoon sugar)

Equipment

Good news, you don’t need any special barista equipment to make this chocolate-flavoured iced coffee!

All you need is a glass (high ball or tumbler; 300ml), a measuring cup, and a latte spoon.

Optional: Handheld milk frother for speedy stirring.

  • Vegan – use oat or other plant-based milk (unsweetened), vegan alternative to whipped cream and vegan-friendly sauces, extracts and toppings.

Top Tips

This iced coffee is best enjoyed cold. The simple recipe literally takes only a few minutes, so don’t worry, your coffee won’t get warm at any stage.

To ensure your drink is as cold as possible, use pre-chilled water, chilled milk and ice cubes just from the freezer.

You can also chill the glass by putting it in the fridge for at least 1 hour before making this iced mocha. The drink will stay even cooler that way.

Storage Instructions

This iced coffee drink is recommended for immediate consumption. Although you can also make it in advance.

Store the coffee, chocolate and milk blend in a bottle in the fridge for up to 1 day. Shake well to pick up any residue from the bottom of the bottle. Pour over ice just before serving.

Iced mocha coffee can also be frozen. Pour the cold coffee & chocolate blend into an ice cube tray and freeze for up to 2 months. Serve several frozen coffee cubes right into a glass, pour over chilled milk, wait a couple of minutes for it to soften, stir, add whipped cream and enjoy.

FAQS

What is an iced mocha?

Iced mocha is a cold coffee blend with milk and chocolate served with ice. It is often served with whipped cream on top. There are also various flavours of iced mocha, ie. peppermint, white chocolate, orange or raspberry.

Can you freeze ice coffee?

Yes, you can. Freeze the cold coffee blend by pouring it into an ice cube tray. This way, defrosting will take only a few minutes and you won’t have to add any more ice. Just add fresh milk, top with cream and enjoy!

Can you make iced coffee from instant coffee (Nescafe)?

Instant coffee dissolves surprisingly well in cold water. Just stir it with a spoon until there is no coffee residue. Add remaining ingredients and enjoy it with ice.

What is the difference between an iced latte and an iced mocha?

They are both iced cold coffee drinks with milk. Iced mocha contains chocolate syrup or cocoa powder for an extra chocolatey flavour. A classic iced latte has no added flavours (syrups).
