Tips For Making Cutout Sugar Cookies

  • While making rolled sugar cookies may seem a little intimidating, I promise that it’s not!
  • The key is to chill your dough completely before rolling it out.
  • Then, make sure you flour your surface AND rolling pin before trying to roll the dough.
  • Flip and roll. Flip and roll. Continue to do this while getting the dough to about 1/4″ all the way around. Easy, right?! It is!
  • Next, you’ll be ready to cut out the shapes. Use your favorite cookie cutter and go to town.
  • Remember to not crowd the dough on the cookie sheet.
  • Make sure to leave a good 2 inches or so in-between the cookies because they will spread out.
  • Next, bake for only 6-8 minutes for a chewy cookie. Allow to cool completely before frosting.

Soft Sugar Cookie FAQS

Do you cut sugar cookies before or after baking?

They are so much easier to cut before baking! You can always clean them up a bit after they’re done baking if you’d like but make sure to cut the dough before it’s baked.

Why do my sugar cookies crack on top?

Believe it or not, you may not have added the exact correct amount of flour to the cookies. If there is too little flour, cracks can emerge. If you’re overly worried about the cracks, this is where frosting comes into play!

Should you chill sugar cookie dough?

Yes, you should chill the cookie dough. Chilling the dough is what keeps it together and helps it cut out into the shapes that you’re wanting to make.

FAQs

What is the secret to cut-out cookies? ›

Pull off the top sheet of parchment, then slide the sheet of dough onto a baking sheet, then pop it in the freezer. (You can stack as many sheets of dough onto one baking sheet as you'd like.) Sandwich your dough between two sheets of parchment, roll, then freeze; it makes cut-out cookies a breeze!

Should you refrigerate cut-out cookies before baking? ›

Refrigerating the dough allows the flour to fully hydrate and helps to make the cookie dough firmer. Firm dough prevents the cookies from spreading too much, which is why chilling the dough is a crucial step for cut-out and rolled cookies.

How do you keep sugar cookie cutouts from spreading? ›

To prevent this make sure the baking sheets are always at least on room temperature. Ideally you want to cut your cookies and then chill them with the baking sheet. that way the tray is still cool when it goes in the oven and the cookies have no time to spread before they are baked through.

How do you use store bought sugar cookie dough for cutouts? ›

Roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness on work surface. Cut out desired shapes using floured 2- to 2 1/2-inch cookie cutter. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 8 to 11 minutes or until edges are light golden brown.

What is the best way to roll out cut out cookies? ›

Place your dough on the bottom sheet of parchment. For recipes that yield more than a dozen cookies, you'll likely have to work in batches of two or more. Cover the dough with the second sheet of parchment. Rock your rolling pin back and forth over the parchment to flatten the dough.

Why do my cut out sugar cookies spread? ›

Your sugar cookies might be spreading because your house is really hot. You may start with a butter that is the right temperature, but if your house is really hot...it's going to start melting before it gets to the oven. In this case...you really will need to chill your dough before baking.

Should you chill sugar cookie dough before cutting? ›

After you make the cookie dough, it must chill for 1–2 hours, and up to 2 days. Chilling is a mandatory step. Without chilling, these cookie cutter sugar cookies won't hold shape.

What happens if I don't chill my sugar cookie dough? ›

Chilling the dough is a key step in making sugar cookies, especially when you're making cut-outs. Even if you're tight on time, make sure to get the dough in the fridge, or even the freezer, even if it's only for a little while. Skip this step, and the dough will be sticky, and much harder to work with.

How long should sugar cookie dough sit out before rolling? ›

A few minutes at room temperature should make it malleable enough to roll out this enough for cutting, and the process of working the dough with a rolling pin will warm it a bit more.

Why are my cutout cookies puffy? ›

Q: Why are my cookies so puffy and cakey? Whipping too much air into the dough. That fluffy texture you want in a cake results from beating a lot of air into the room temperature butter and sugar, and it does the same for cookies. So don't overdo it when you're creaming together the butter and sugar.

Why won't my cut-out cookies hold their shape? ›

Many cookie recipes will not work when cut out because they're designed to spread. Are you sure you're using enough flour, when making the dough? Try adding a little more flour. And when you roll out the dough, to cut the shapes, use floured cookie cutters.

Can you cut out store-bought sugar cookie dough? ›

Simple metal cookie cutters can transform store-bought slice-and-bake dough into the most festive holiday dessert. For these Christmas cut-outs, all you need is a 16.5-ounce roll of Pillsbury sugar-cookie dough, some flour, and an oven (elbow grease not included).

Can I roll out store-bought sugar cookie dough? ›

Just roll the dough into one inch balls and then coat them in equal parts cinnamon and sugar. Then I press them gently with a glass before baking them according to the directions on the package. That's it!

Is it better to bake cookies at 325 or 350? ›

350° is the standard temp for a cookie, and it's a great one. Your cookies will bake evenly and the outside will be done at the same time as the inside. Baking at 325° also results in an evenly baked cookie, but the slower cooking will help yield a chewier cookie. The outsides will be a little softer, too.

Why won't my cut out cookies hold their shape? ›

Oven Temperature

If you still notice that your cookies are spreading, another thing you can do to help cookies keep their shape, is increase the heat 10-25 degrees higher than the suggested temperature on the recipe. Every oven is different, so you may need to try this for yours.

Why are my cut out cookies flat? ›

If you use too much butter, the cookies will end up flat and greasy. And if you use too little flour, the amount of butter and sugar will be proportionally too high, meaning the cookies will spread for the aforementioned reasons.
