I do not know the owner but see the boat around locally. He does a nice job on the maintenance from what I can see.

Owner seems unlikely to dicker. 2002 Evinrude, no trailer, nicely kept hull and equipment. Ask is a tad high in my opinion. He did not like my opinion. I wish him luck though.

Does seem a bit high especially when a repower is imminent.
Anybody know what that boat/motor cost in 2002?

I went to see it, the boat is in very nice condition, but the engine looks like its been around. I think you are right on about taking into consideration of a a near future repower

Thanks, glad to know I was not missing out. Not my first boat rodeo. From what I have learned it is not desirable to deal with original owners when buying used boats. No matter how old or tired the engines, electronics, etc. they never seem realistic about depreciation. Ass for every seat though... maybe he will find an ass with money they want to burn...

Price a new one and then let me know if this boat even with a new engine is priced out of line. If the owner has taken good care of the boat and the boat is desirable he should be able to get his price.

New, which is a hard comparison, because most Eastern Rosborough 246 are sea campers with brackets and big four stroke power, is around 150k. That is with trailer.
18 years old with a pos Evinrude Ficht and no trailer for 42k, no haggle room... you can keep it sir!
I don’t care if you can eat cereal from the bilge. Makes no sense.
Add 7k for nice heavy trailer
Add 22k for a new Yamaha 200 with gauges and binnacle controls rigged...
At 42k ask with no dickering...
Now you are at 71k...
Plus the typical piddly sh*t, so at that point you are halfway to a new boat, one with much more fit and finish than this one.
So, again. No thanks. Plus these are all recent quotes from reasonable dealers I would deal with.

Last year there was a new Eastern 24 HT with Merc 150 for under $70k. I almost bought it. The Merc kept me away.

Further ammunition. Rosboroughs are built well, especially the pre-Eastern ones. Plus Eastern modified the keel in a way I dislike. But, here is another perfect example of why I think this one is NOT a good deal at the asking price.

Did you hear the engine run? Is it trash? Does it run well enough to get you out and back? These boats are built heavy and would need a substantial truck to pull it any distance so to some owners who don't already own a truck storing it at the marina would make more sence then purchasing an expensive trailer. Curious what you think this boat is worth as is? I respect your opinion which has logic, just curious.

They are holding value. Here's a 2005 with 2015 power and a trailer.

The biggest problem with this boat is it's the short cabin version. They're worth way less on the used boat market. One at 30 & one at 35 on Yachtworld. Not an IO helps but not that much when the outboard is this old. If you bought this boat at the asking price & added a new outboard & trailer you'd have way more in it than you could get out of it.

Yes, the Custom Wheelhouse (no co*ckpit overhang) and transom-hung (old) outboard bring its value down. I bought a 2002 246 LSV with 2002 outboard on a bracket 2 years ago planning to repower if I could just get a couple of seasons out of the original engine. Worked out really well for me - LOVE this boat. It’s really sturdy for its LOA and with a F200 outboard, we get a very nice, fuel-efficient 16-20 kt cruise.

That is an apple and orange comp. that one has a 2015 F200 Yamaha and trailer, and is a camper version with bracket. As I stated. Plus, that is 3 years newer. I rest my case. I believe they are great, I would not call on one if they weren’t. It is a larger version of what I already have. Yesterday afternoon and night I had blast on mine. Maybe it will be mine for a long time...

It's also got built in heat & air, radar, a full co*ckpit enclosure and even a davit for the dinghy. Got to be one of the best versions of this boat around. Whoever set this boat up knew what they were doing.

Last year I bought my 2001 RF-246 Custom Wheelhouse in better than average condition for $32K. While I had a survey done, I did not have a dealer survey of the engines. They ran good, and only had 300 hours on them. I thought I could get a couple seasons out of them. It was a gamble, and I lost. The engines were corroded beyond repair. So, I spent an additional $28K for 2 new Yamaha 115's a week after getting the boat. No haggling with a boat yard the week of July 4th, when you want the boat turned around in a reasonable time. Add another $8K in electronics over this past winter. So, I'm pushing $70K with my purchase. I try not to think about it, and enjoy the boat.

Notice the hose where I'm dutifully flushing my new engines after each trip out

The upside is that now you've got a great boat with brand new engines for about half what a new RF 246 would have cost. Might be the smartest way to get into one of these.
